Mandan Art Hosts Yarn Spinner’s Demonstration

The Mandan Art Association will host a demonstration of the North Dakota Spinners Saturday, June 4, at the MAA Gallery, 411 W. Main St. 1 – 4 p.m.
Spinners use traditional treadling wheels and spindles to transform fleece and other materials into yarn. “Bamboo, silk, cotton, corn, alpaca—any kind of fiber there is can be spun into yarn,” says spinner Shayne Bjorndahl. In fact, she says some even use plastic bags to spin a material they call plarn.
The group says spinning is quickly rising in popularity, and it’s not just for the homemade yarn.
“The act of spinning itself is highly soothing, meditative and peaceful once you have learned the skill,” says spinner Dawn Wetzein. “It’s very addictive once you get the hang of it.”
The demonstration is free and the public is invited to visit the gallery throughout the afternoon to observe and talk to the artisans.
Later this summer, Mandan Art will continue its celebration of the fiber arts with a month-long exhibit of textile and fabric work in July.
